İsmail Avcıbaş was born in Ankara, Turkey. He received B.S. and M.S. degrees from the department of Electronics Engineering, Uludağ University, Bursa, Turkey in 1992 and 1994 respectively. He received Ph.D. degree from the Electrical and Electronics Engineering department, Boğaziçi University, İstanbul, Turkey, in 2001. With a scholarship from The Scientific Council of Turkey, TÜBITAK, he carried out research on image compression and steganalysis in the Department of Computer and Information Science, Polytechnic University, Brooklyn, NY, in 1999–2000. Before joining OSTİM Technical University, he worked as an academic staff at various universities in Turkey.
Dr. Avcıbaş’s research interests are in the broad area of information forensics and security. He pioneered the development
of universal steganalysis techniques. His work on steganalysis was supported by Air Force Office of Scientific
Research (AFOSR), Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), NSF and TÜBITAK. He developed techniques for multimedia
source identification and manipulation detection. His works on multimedia forensics have been supported by several
TÜBITAK research projects.
